A new Hannaford store in Winthrop
The new Winthrop Hannaford supermarket opened on Saturday, July 25 to crowds that stretched far along the building. The doors were open slightly earlier than the planned 8 a.m. because of the threat of rain, but it did not rain. The mood was upbeat. The parking lot, shelves, and aisles were full. Some parked in adjacent lots to be at the opening. With approximately 12,000 different items on the shelves, there was a lot to choose from. A Hannaford spokesperson said stocking the shelves had taken two weeks. On Sunday, July 26, the parking lot was still full. The crowds were slightly thinner, although hefty. Free reusable shopping bags and aluminum water bottles were being offered to customers. Many were taking advantage of the discount coupons that had arrived in their mailboxes.
