Couple works tirelessly to rescue Maine's animals in needIf you have children, then you know about “Go, Diego Go!” And, if you’re anything like me, you wonder what happens when Diego -- the cartoon “animal rescuer” -- grows up and is no longer eight years old. Today, I think I saw Diego when he grows up. He’s a lot like Don Cote, who along with his wife Carleen, have spent 45 years doing what they can to save animals in the state of Maine. “Every (species of) animal that walks Maine’s woods, we have taken care of it,” Carleen said. And, they’ve done it largely on their own dime. They don’t make a cent off their “Wildlife Care Center” at their home in Vassalboro, not that they ever set out to. All they ever wanted to do was help. Orphaned deer. Injured foxes. Abandoned raccoons. You name it, they’ve seen it. “We never planned for any of this,” Carleen said. “It just exploded.” ‘Round the clock they work to feed and treat animals to be released back into the woods on their own each autumn. “We never had children,” Carleen said. “Our children are feathered and furred.” But those feathered and furred children require almost round-the-clock care. The “retired” couple say the get, on average, 3-4 hours of sleep a night at this time of year -- as orphaned animals are still in their baby stages. “It’s good work,” Don says with a wide smile, “if you don’t mind not sleeping at all.” Donations to the Wildlife Care Center can be made at 1787 North Belfast Ave., Vassalboro, ME 04989.
