Who should run for governor in 2010?

The list of those who are seriously considering a run for governor got one name longer this week when Maine & Co.'s Matt Jacobson said he formed an exploratory committee. Jacobson, 48, is a Republican, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, and his job is to bring new businesses to Maine. The press release announcing his exploratory committee -- which includes Augusta Mayor Roger Katz -- focuses heavily on the economy. He's a totally new name to Maine politics. On the Democratic side, former Maine Attorney General Steven Rowe has said he will run, although he has yet to make a formal announcement. Rowe recently landed with the law firm Verrill Dana. And for the Green Independents, Bar Harbor attorney Lynne Williams has said she will run as well. The list will grow in the coming year. Last gubernatorial go-round, there were 14 people registered as candidates with the state Ethics Commission in February of 2006. (The election was in November of that year) So rather than speculate on who will or won't run, let's talk about who should run. What's most important to you in a governor? Is it party affiliation? Experience? Bold ideas? A new face? A woman? (It would be a first if she won) A conservative? A liberal?

Statehouse reporter Susan Cover plumbs the depths of Maine politics to bring you the scoop on candidates, elected officials, parties and rainmakers.
