BC law students upset by ad campaignThe Yes on 1’s television and radio ads that feature Boston College Law School Professor Scott Fitzgibbon is creating quite a stir on campus. The student newspaper has had a couple of stories in recent days about Fitzgibbon, along with plenty of reader comments critical of his decision to appear in an ad for the Maine campaign against same-sex marriage. There’s been enough of an uproar that the Law School Dean, John Garvey, wrote a letter defending Fitzgibbon and explaining the guidelines for professors who want to participate in political campaigns. To be fair, the ad that’s been airing in Maine makes it clear that Fitzgibbon is expressing a personal opinion and is not speaking on behalf of the school. Yet some students worry that potential enrollees will steer away from the school if they think it’s anti-gay.
