17th person files to run for governor

 J. Martin Vachon of Mariaville is the 17th person to file paperwork with the state ethics commission to run for governor.

Vachon is the fifth Republican to file. And for those keeping score at home, there are six Democrats, two Greens and four unenrolled candidates in the race.

And though it seems early, for party candidates, the June primary is only 10 months away. It’s getting to the point where serious candidates really need to file so they can begin raising the money necessary to win.

So who’s next? Pat McGowan, Bill Diamond, Kevin Raye, Josh Tardy?

Statehouse reporter Susan Cover plumbs the depths of Maine politics to bring you the scoop on candidates, elected officials, parties and rainmakers.
