Struggling Hamels; AFL stats

When I picked the Phillies to win the World Series, I should have added a few disclaimers, like Cole Hamels needs to pitch like he's capable.

Hamels gave up a 3-0 lead Saturday night in the Phillies loss. New York is up 2 games to 1, and has Sabathia on the mound tonight. Joe Blanton needs to pitch the game of his life.

Eight Red Sox prospects are taking part in the Arizona Fall League. Here's how they are doing:

Reliever Richie Lentz is showing his promise again. In 8 2/3 innings, he has a 1.04 ERA and 0.58 WHIP (walks/hits per inning).

The three other pitchers are:

Randor Bierd, 14 2/3, 3.68, 1.02

Chris Province, 7 2/3, 3.52, 1.04

Dustin Richardson, 6 1/3, 6.75, 2.10

Among the hitters, catcher Luis Exposito is batting .259 (7-for-27), outfielder Ryan Kalish is at .256 (10-for-39), infielder Chris Kelly is hitting .259 (4-for-16) and shortstop Jose Iglesias is at .216 (8-for-37).

Kevin covers baseball for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. He first reported on spring training games for the St. Petersburg Times in 1978. He wisely moved to Maine in 1994 and now writes about the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox — when he's not coaching Little League baseball.

He is married to Nancy, and the couple recently completed their lineup card with the birth of their ninth child.
