For all the big money that the Yankees and Red Sox throw around, neither team could come up with a fourth starter in the playoffs.

Boston was prepared to go with Game 1 starter Jon Lester in Game 4 of the Divisional Series. Lester would have been on three days' rest, instead of the customary four days ... of course, Boston did not reach Game 4, and Lester has plenty of time to rest now.

New York is going with C.C. Sabathia tonight in Game 4 of the ALCS, on three days' rest, after throwing 113 pitches in Game 1. Sabathia is a horse, but we'll see.

The Angels go with Scott Kazmir, who did not dazzle in Boston.

One more note about the ALCS. Check out the New York Daily News for the story on Scott Boras promoting Johnny Damon on his upcoming free agency. Got to hand it to Boras. Even in the playhoffs, it's never about the team.

In the Arizona Fall League, shortstop Jose Iglesias went 1-for-4m, but he's still battting .444. Ryan Kalish (.286) went 2-for-4 ... Pitcher Randor Bierd (1.50 ERA) gave up 1 ER in 3 innings.
